Ray-Ban is one of the leading global eyewear brands originally created in the mid-thirties by Bausch & Lomb. First and foremost, the brand is famous for its legendary Wayfarer and Aviator sunglasses. Their prototypes, Anti-Glare sunglasses, were originally created for the U.S. Air Force looking for the shades that would reliably serve aviators during maneuvers in strong light conditions: protect them from the damaging rays of the sun, not fog up at altitude, and look elegant. The first Anti-Glare sunglasses featured plastic frames with green colored lenses which resisted glare and kept the sun out of the eyes.
The pilots instantly took to the glasses and earned them the moniker “Aviator Glasses” or “Aviators” – a term which now describes all shades with similar designs to the original Ray-Ban. By the way, in 1937, the name “Anti-Glare” was changed to “Ray-Ban,” which was actually the first step to the company’s long-term success. In the early forties, one of the company’s developments – a lens with a gradient mirror coating – found application in the market of sunglasses. Large metal glasses with a gradient mirror surface became available in 1948; this technology is still used by Ray-Ban.
Ray-Ban’s Aviators gained broader popularity during the Second World War thanks to General Douglas MacArthur who was photographed in Ray-Ban aviator shades landing on the beach in the Philippines.
