HISTORY OF SAINT LAURENT

Yves Saint Laurent is a great fashion couturier who has strongly influenced the industry’s trends in the 1960s to the present day. Born in 1936, in Oran, Algeria, Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent has grown incredibly creative and enthusiastic boy dreaming of Paris and world fame. In only three decades, Yves Saint Laurent has become one of the most notable designers after the creation of his arguably the most celebrated Le Smoking suit, the classic tuxedo suit for women.

In 1961, Yves Saint Laurent founded a House of Haute Couture, one of the most respected fashion houses of the 20th century. The designer has given mass appeal to such fashion trends as safari jackets, tall boots and tight pants for women, black leather jackets decorated with fur, chic beatnik look of turtlenecks, sheer blouses, just to name a few. Yves Saint Laurent has also mainstreamed the idea of wearing classic silhouettes from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. He was never fearful of provoking or shocking the fashion world in the name of freedom of expression.

Since the late 90s some of the most respected names in the fashion industry, from Tom Ford to Lanvin's Alber Elbaz, have spent several years at the brand's helm. The Great couturier died in 2008 of brain cancer. In four years, Hedi Slimane, who was a menswear designer of the label in 1996, turned back to the fashion house and shortened the brand's name to Saint Laurent. Nowadays, the label is headed by Anthony Vaccarello and is still synonymous worldwide with true Italian luxury and refinement.
