HISTORY

The legendary brand Nike was established in 1964 by Bill Bowerman, a coach in the Oregon University, and Phil Knight, his student; and at the time of launching it was known as Blue Ribbon Sports company. The first retail outlet was opened in 1966 and introduced its brand shoe in 1972. Later, in 1978 the company was renamed Nike, Inc. with its recognizable “swoosh” logotype that is known by millions of people all over the globe. The name was derived from the Greek Goddess of Victory, and nowadays, this famous brand has its stores and distributors in more than 180 countries worldwide.

In the late 1980s, the company expanded its production due to many acquisitions, including Converse, Inc., Cole Haan, Umbro, and Canstar Sports. In 1996 the brand launched its Nike ACG line that creates various products for extreme sports, including mountain biking and snowboarding. At the beginning of the 21st century, the well-known company started to manufacture and sell high-quality sports-technology products like wrist compasses and portable heart-rate monitors.

The success of the brand was significantly increased thanks to famous athletes who became the company’s spokesperson, including Roger Federer, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Mia Hamm.
