Acetate is a polymer thermoplastic consisting of plasticized and stabilized cellulose acetate obtained chemically from cotton or wool. Using heat and pressure the material can be softened and given any shape. After each subsequent cooling, the material becomes stronger. Acetate is a nylon-based plastic, meaning that it’s a lot stronger, more durable, and flexible than regular plastic which explains why it’s useful for sunglasses frames. It is more resistant to pressure placed upon the frames and can bend further before breaking.Cellulose acetate frames are quite cheap, and at the same time, their rich color scheme gives designers great opportunities to realize their ideas. The disadvantages of acetate frames are the fact that, in places of contact with the face, the material gradually discolors under the influence of sweat. It is also exposed to common chemicals, acetone, solvents, etc. Acetate frames are in demand, especially frames made by milling of solid sheets consisting of multi-colored layers or layers with different degrees of transparency. Comfortable, light, fashionable — acetate offers all these things. Moreover, being a plant-based plastic, acetate is hypoallergenic and this make acetate frames indispensable for people highly sensitive to allergens.
